Geographical and Socio–Economic Background

The Northern Province is divided into five administrative Districts.  Jaffna is one among them. Jaffna is further divided into five zones for matters pertaining to Education of which Jaffna Zone is one consisting of three Divisional Secretariats, namely, Jaffna, Nallur and Kopay.

The area of Jaffna District is 1023.22 sq .km. Our educational administrative area, the Jaffna Zone is the largest with an extent of 149.85 Sq. km.

All the villages in Jaffna Division and most parts of Nallur Division belong to Jaffna Municipal Council, (24 wards and 59 villages) and Kopay  comes directly under the Valikamam East Pradeshya Sabha. (31 G.S.Division and 46 villages )

Although Jaffna Zone covers totally 99 G.S divisions, the estimated  population is as follows.

Division                                       Population

Jaffna                                                              48 889

Nallur                                                              60 066

Kopay                                                             71 095

Total                                                             180 050

Jaffna zone stands unique when viewed by the perspective of performances of candidates  in Public Exams like Grade 5 Scholarship, G.C.E.(O/L) and  G.C.E.(A/L). All the Tertiary Education Institutions, such as University of Jaffna, Advanced Technical Institute, Teachers Colleges, Technical College and National College of Education are all situated within the Jaffna Zonal Area.

The economic background of the people is generally weak; the majority in the Kopay – Valikamam East area is either farmers or farm workers, while 50% of the inhabitants of the Jaffna Municipal Council area are Office workers. Facilities for schools in this area are still  inadequate.

Even though the learning conditions are bit harder, we have achieved many remarkable records and credentials in curricular and co curricular activities this year.
